Subject: Planning to Buy a New Computer for CLMS2PC? Read This First
Secretaries and CLMS (Coordinators)
If you're planning to buy a new Windows computer for running CLMS2PC, please read this important note before making a purchase.
CLMS2PC is not compatible with ARM64-based Windows devices
The SQL Server component required by CLMS2PC will not install on ARM64 Windows devices. These computers use a different processor architecture that Microsoft SQL Server does not currently support.
(Microsoft’s Official Notice)
What to avoid
Avoid buying any Windows device that runs on an ARM64 processor. These are commonly found in:
- Microsoft Surface Pro X
- Some Windows laptops with Qualcomm Snapdragon processors
- Ultra-thin or fan less devices marketed for battery life or mobile use
These devices may look like regular Windows PCs, but they use a different architecture that is not compatible with key parts of the CLMS2PC setup.
What to buy instead
Look for a device with an x64-based processor (Intel or AMD). These are widely supported and will work with SQL Server and CLMS2PC.
Not sure how to check?
- From the Windows Search Bar type System Information
- Bad - If it says “64‑bit operating system, ARM‑based processor”, that means ARM64.
- Good - If it says “64‑bit operating system, x64‑based processor”, that means x64. (Pureinfotech)

Or feel free to reach out to reach out to clms@elks.org or open a ticket from the Support Tab in CLMS2Web before purchasing, and we’ll be happy to verify the specs for you.
Why this matters?
Purchasing an ARM64 device could mean you won’t be able to install CLMS2PC at all, resulting in unnecessary delays or returns. A few minutes of checking now can save a lot of frustration later.
Please contact support at clms@elks.org if you have any questions regarding this announcement.
